Wickfest = Girl Power Fest!
What fun I had MCing the Opening Ceremonies for WickFest (aka The Wickenheiser World Female Hockey Festival) at the beautiful new Winsport Canada Olympic Park rinks!
Not only am I a fan of Hayley Wickenheiser the hockey player, but I’m a fan of Hayley Wickenheiser the person. Hayley loves the game of hockey and she is doing all she can to ensure girls get the opportunity to play the game, have fun, be competitive – and perhaps one day be members of our Canadian Women’s Olympic Hockey Team – just like her!! 100% of the proceeds from this event are donated to Right To Play and JumpStart to ensure kids from around the world have the opportunity to participate in a sport that Hayley feels has enriched her life so much.
This year, teams of girls came from across Canada – including Rankin Inlet, Nunavet – from the US and Mexico – and boy were they excited to be in the same room as 4-time Olympic gold medalist Hayley!! And seeing and feeling their excitement was what made it so much fun for me!!
I got to stand in front of these girls, tell them about the experience they were about to have, get them all pumped up – then bring Hayley up on stage!! Hayley walked through the crowd and girls were high-fiving her left, right and centre. The best comment I heard, was from a girl, about 10-years old, who looked at her friends with awe and adoration in her eyes and said…”she touched me”!!
And by the way, Hayley high-fived me too!! I love my job!! 😉
